Independent Living SW
After Mind in Exeter and East Devon closed their doors for the last time, staff and clients were heartbroken. As I was the manager at the time for the community team, I decided that I would not leave the vulnerable people without support.
The staff wanted to carry on working for me, so I started Independent Living and one by one the staff re-joined me as the work requirement grew. We have never looked back, but only forward to the future and what it can bring to so many people needing our support. We do not have grants or rely on funding but survive through good feedback and excellent relationships we have with our clients. We are proud of the service we provide.
Throughout this period of transition, Independent Living SW Ltd continued to raise awareness of mental health and to campaign for better services through various activities, some linked to other organisations like the RESPECT campaign and others more local such as the reinvestment in mental health locally post the sales of old psychiatric hospitals.
Our ambition is to provide a consistent support service across the range of needs and to widen access to our services to better meet the health promotion and prevention strategy that underpins our values.
